About the Abolition Project

The Abolition Project is a non-profit think-and-do tank that uses the power of STORYTELLING, participatory action research, and systems thinking to combat forms of modern-day slavery.

By centering those most vulnerable to forms of captivity—Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women and girls—we advance strategies for deconstructing the prison industrial complex, divesting from human captivity, and investing in impacted communities.

Our projects use PARTICIPATORY METHODS to:

  1. combat modern-day slavery through visual storytelling

  2. develop captivating multimedia content to raise awareness

  3. utilize digital platforms to reach diverse audiences

We use SYSTEMS THINKING to advance abolition by:

  1. analyzing the interconnected nature of modern-day slavery

  2. identifying leverage points for systemic transformation

  3. developing comprehensive strategies for lasting change

Centering BIPOC Women and Girls in the Fight Against Modern-Day Slavery

Understand the unique approach that drives the work of the Abolition Project:

MODERN-DAY SLAVERY

Forms of modern-day slavery include human trafficking, punitive incarceration, and immigrant detention.

PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH

We partner with community organizers, directly impacted persons, scholar- and artist-activists, and service providers to populate our resources.

SYSTEMS MAPPING

We build interactive systems maps illuminating strategic partnerships and initiatives to advance liberation for BIPOC women and girls.

BIPOC WOMEN & GIRLS

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women and girls (all woman-identified persons).

PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

The prison industrial complex includes prisons, jails, and detention centers, as well as the vast apparatus that supports profiting off of human captivity.

COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE

We use the collective intelligence of abolitionists to form relationships across issue areas.
